Capdepera

Barely 8km (5 miles) east of Artà is the ochre-coloured town of Capdepera, its streets filled with flowers. Steps lead from the Plaça d’Espanya to the Castell de Capdepera (www.castellcapdepera.com; daily mid-Mar–mid-Oct 10am–10pm, mid-Oct–mid-Mar 9am–5pm). The largest castle in Mallorca, it originated in Roman times, was enlarged by the Moors enlarged it and strengthened further by the Christians. Below the defensive wall, from which there is a superb view, stands the 19th-century church of Sant Bartomeu.

From Capdepera a road runs through farmland, past the Canyamel Golf Club (www.canyamelgolf.com), where a new road layout promises urbanisation to come, then winds high above the Platja Canyamel development to the Coves d’Artà ° [map] (daily Apr–June and Oct 10am–6pm, July–Sept until 7pm, Nov–Mar until 5pm; guided tours in English last around 35–40 mins). Carved out of the sheer cliff face, the caves are less commercialised than the Coves del Drac (for more information, click here) and the limestone rock formations are quite awesome. In the summer, you can get a boat here from Cala Ratjada.
